APC candidate wins Kano by-election with 35,356 votes

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Shuaibu Rabiu, winner of the Kano federal constituency by-election after polling the highest votes during the exercise in the state.

INEC declared that Rabiu polled 35,356 votes to emerge winner of the contest which was boycotted by major opposition parties in Kano.

Rabiu’s victory clears the way for him to occupy the vacant seat in the House of Representatives, following a keenly watched election that attracted candidates from other political parties.

INEC officials said the APC candidate obtained the highest number of valid votes cast and fulfilled all legal requirements needed to be declared the winner.

Announcing the outcome yesterday, the Returning Officer, Prof. Umar Sani, said, “Having satisfied the provisions of the Electoral Act and scored the highest number of valid votes, Shuaibu Rabiu is hereby declared the winner of the election.”

The result, as gathered, is expected to strengthen the APC’s political standing in the area and further consolidate the party’s recent electoral gains in northern Nigeria.

Moreover, the by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of the constituency’s former representative, Muhammad Hassan, earlier in 2026.

Rabiu is now expected to complete the remainder of the late lawmaker’s tenure in the National Assembly before 2027 poll.

The election, which took place across the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in Kano State, recorded participation from multiple political parties.

Furthermore, security agencies and election observers reported that the voting process was largely peaceful.

Ahead of the poll, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had deployed electoral materials and personnel to the polling areas, expressing confidence in its readiness to conduct a credible election.

The by-election was widely viewed as an important political contest in a state regarded as one of Nigeria’s major electoral battlegrounds.

With the declaration of the result, Rabiu officially becomes the constituency’s representative in the House of Representatives, while the APC celebrates another electoral success in the region.
