The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has cautioned state governors and other political leaders against placing partisan interests above the welfare of citizens, urging them to focus on policies that deliver tangible benefits to the people.
Akiolu admonished that leadership must be driven by honesty, accountability, and a sincere commitment to public service rather than political calculations or personal ambition, reminding that leaders at levels of government are entrusted with power primarily to serve the people.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kadri Hamzat, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Iga Idugaran palace in Lagos Island, the traditional ruler advised that governance should be centred on empowerment as a way of promoting self-reliance and sustainable development in the society.
Akiolu recalled his long-standing relationship with the Hamzat, noting that he had known him for over 14 years and had followed his political journey closely, re-affirming his confidence in his leadership capacity, describing him as intelligent, hardworking, and deeply committed to public service.
According to him, Hamzat’s emergence in leadership reflects both merit and divine timing, as earlier attempts at higher political office did not materialise despite his obvious capabilities.
” I have known Quadri Obafemi Hamzat I say for over 14 years,” the Lagos ceremonial leader said.
“His late father was there and in discussion, we promise him that with the intelligence this boy has displayed he will be a good candidate to be considered for the governorship of the state. And that the father should release Hamzat to him.
“He had attempted this before and I must be honest about it. One of those, at that time, I didn’t hide it. And I made it abundantly clear in my previous interview about 10 years ago. He’s very intelligent, very hard working,” the monarch stated.
Reiterating his position on security reforms, Akiolu expressed support for the establishment of state or local government policing, describing it as a viable solution to Nigeria’s security challenges if properly implemented.
In his remarks, Hamzat described the visit as both symbolic and cultural, noting that it reflects a conscious effort to preserve Yoruba heritage and strengthen communal identity.
He said such engagements help bridge generational gaps by reminding younger citizens of their roots and the importance of cultural continuity in public life.
Hamzat also reassured residents of Lagos State of the government’s unwavering commitment to peace and security, stressing that the administration would continue to take decisive measures to protect lives and property while ensuring that Lagos remains stable, inclusive, and conducive for economic growth.
