MR Hafis Bello, Lagos West Senatorial District candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the district deserves a senator whose first loyalty is to the people, not a political party
Bello said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)on Tuesday in Lagos
He said that the challenges facing residents of the district were not a failure of democracy, but the outcome of poor representation over the years.
“The people of Lagos West have not been betrayed by democracy: they have been betrayed by the kind of politicians that have been representing them” the aspirant said.
Bello, founder of H.O.B Agricpreneur,an agro-based company, said that the district required practical and performance-driven representation.
According to him, the district needs a representative with direct experience in production, agriculture and economic development.
“Lagos West does not need another career politician;it needs someone who understands production, food systems and livelihoods, not just from policy briefs but from hands-on experience,” Bello said.
The ADC candidate said that district, regarded as the most populous senatorial district in the country, held massive economic and human potential that remained largely untapped.
He expressed concern over infrastructure gaps, youth unemployment and underdevelopment in several communities across the district.
Bello said that his experience in agribusiness and participation in national policy discussions would enable him to attract greater federal attention and opportunities to the district.
“I do not need to introduce myself in Abuja. The work I do in agriculture already places me in key policy circles.
“I intend to use that access for the benefit of Lagos West,” he said.
Bello described Badagry, a border community, as a strategic economic and tourism hub, saying it had not received adequate legislative attention.
He added that Badagry’s location along the Nigeria-Benin Republic border and the ECOWAS trade corridor presented significant opportunities for economic growth.
“Badagry has waited for decades for a senator who will effectively champion its interests in the right legislative committees and policy platforms,” Bello said.
He said his choice of ADC as a platform was to allow him prioritise the interest of constituents above partisan considerations.
“A senator’s first loyalty must be to the people of Lagos West, not to a party structure,” the aspirant said.
He expressed confidence that with purposeful leadership, Lagos West could become a stronger contributor to Nigeria’s economic and political growth. (NAN)
