Tinubu tasks Lagos APC assembly candidates on grassroots mobilisation

President Bola Tinubu has charged the 40 candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) contesting for seats in the Lagos State House of Assembly to intensify grassroots mobilisation, strengthen party unity and remain committed to delivering democratic dividends to the people ahead of the 2027 elections.

The charge was conveyed during a traditional Sallah homage paid to the president at his Lagos residence by Lagos APC leaders, candidates and government officials led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting on Saturday in Ikoyi, Sanwo-Olu said the meeting afforded the party’s House of Assembly flag bearers the opportunity to interact directly with the president and receive guidance on leadership, public service and loyalty to the party.

According to the governor, Tinubu urged the candidates to remain focused on their responsibilities to constituents and to ensure that government programmes and policies translate into tangible benefits for the people at the grassroots.

“This is another solid visit to Mr. President, who graciously opened his residence to us,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“We came with the governorship flag bearer, the deputy governor, party leaders and, more importantly, the 40 men and women who emerged as our party’s flag bearers for the Lagos State House of Assembly.”

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the candidates expressed appreciation to the president for his leadership and assured him of their determination to promote the achievements of both the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government across their constituencies.

He said the candidates pledged to work diligently to sustain public confidence in the APC and strengthen the party’s support base ahead of future elections.

“The candidates have given their commitment and assured the president that they will go back to their constituencies, work across board and ensure that people see the real dividends of democracy,” the governor said.

“They have also assured him that they will do the work and justify the confidence reposed in them.”

The governor further revealed that the president advised the candidates to foster unity within the party by reaching out to all stakeholders, including those who participated in the party primaries but did not emerge victorious.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that despite the APC’s dominance in Lagos politics, the party would not take electoral success for granted.

“As candidates of the party, they have a responsibility to close ranks and reach out to everyone, including those who contested against them,” he said.

“We will not take anything for granted. We want to hit the ground running and ensure that every constituent is carried along.”

The governor also announced that the party would provide the candidates with the necessary structures, campaign support and voter data to strengthen grassroots engagement and improve outreach efforts across the state.

Expressing confidence in the ability of the candidates to effectively market the party and its programmes, Sanwo-Olu said they were fully prepared for the task ahead.

“They are motivated, encouraged and ready to go out there and sell the party and sell it very well,” he said.
