Police probe motorcyclist death in Oyo


A middle aged commercial motorcyclist on Saturday met his untimely death in Iseyin town during an alleged encounter with policemen at a checkpoint.

Blueprint learnt that during the said encounter, one of the policemen allegedly hit the commercial motorcycle rider in the head. He slumped and was later confirmed dead.

According to sources, it all started when the policemen on duty were making efforts to stop the Okada man, he refused to stop and out of anger, one of the policemen allegedly hit him on the head with his baton.

Reacting to the incident, the Oyo state Police command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the state Commissioner of Police, has ordered ā€ the detention of all officers involved,Ā 

ā€ Earlier today, an encounter occurred between police officers from the Border Patrol Unit stationed along the Iseyin/Oyo Road and a Fulani man riding a motorcycle.Ā 

ā€œInformation available indicates that the individual became restive and violent, leading to a confrontation with the officersā€, he said .

DSP Ayanlade added, during the ensuing clash, he was struck and fell from his motorcycle.

He was immediately rushed to a medical facility, where he was confirmed deadā€.

ā€ Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the detention of all officers involved, pending the outcome of a thorough investigation, which is currently ongoing.

ā€ The Commissioner has also directed that an autopsy be conducted to medically ascertain the exact cause of deathā€.

The PPRO stressed ā€œit is pertinent to note that a brief protest occurred in Iseyin in response to the incident; however, the situation was swiftly brought under control, and the crowd was peacefully dispersed after assurances that justice will be servedā€.Ā
