Governor Nasir Idris has assured the Kebbi state’s civil servants of his administration’s readiness to address all issues pertaining to their welfare and security.
He said this at this year’s May Day celebration in Birnin Kebbi on Friday while responding to the demands by the leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), vowing to tackle them accordingly.
“Labour remains an important element in societal development and economic growth, and the government is aware of the challenges facing workers in Kebbi,” he said.
He said his government would continue to pay salaries to all categories of workers promptly under the new minimum wage regime, including gratuity and pension.
The government, he said, placed a premium on improving the economic prosperity of households through empowerment and other welfare schemes.
He acknowledged that, “West Africa is battling with security challenges but my administration will confront it head-on towards the return of peace, tranquility, commercial activities and improved agricultural production.”
He expressed his government’s appreciation to workers for “affirming their faith in this government,” and solicited for further cooperation and understanding towards the development of the state.
Earlier, the Kebbi state NLC chairman, Comrade Murtala Usman, highlighted insecurity, low economic activities and difficulties in accessing farmlands by farmers arising from banditry as serious issues bedevilling the wellbeing of workers.
Usman said organised labour acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing insecurity and economic challenges nationwide, as well as the governor’s exemplary leadership and commitment to improving the welfare of workers.
