The National Treasurer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Matthew Uguru, has firmly dismissed reports alleging that he has joined the race for the Ebonyi state governorship, describing the claim as “fictitious, malicious, and entirely false.”
In a strongly worded statement issued on Thursday, Uguru refuted a viral social media publication which claimed he had purchased nomination forms to contest against the incumbent governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, ahead of the next gubernatorial election.
The statement, signed by Albert Oketa on his behalf, said the report was deliberately concocted by mischief-makers seeking to create tension and sow division within the ruling party, particularly among stakeholders in Izzi clan.
Uguru maintained that he has no governorship ambition and has not purchased any expression of interest or nomination forms, contrary to the claims circulating online.
He pointed to official records at the office of the APC National Organising Secretary, which, as of May 1, 2026, show that Governor Nwifuru remains the sole aspirant who has completed the purchase of both the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the Ebonyi governorship race under the party.
The APC treasurer warned against the spread of false information, noting that such publications are capable of undermining party unity and misleading the public.
He further accused the promoters of the report of attempting to tarnish his image and distract him from his responsibilities within the party’s national leadership.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the APC, Uguru stressed that his current focus remains on discharging his duties as National Treasurer and contributing to the stability and success of the party.
He urged party members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the report in its entirety and rely only on verified information from official party channels.
The statement underscores growing concerns within political circles over the increasing spread of misinformation on social media as the 2027 election cycle gradually approaches.
