THE Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom as the state joined the global community to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace,” highlights the critical role of a free, responsible and independent media in promoting peace, human rights and sustainable development.
The global commemoration is being anchored by a UNESCO conference in Lusaka, Zambia.
In a statement issued on Monday in Kaduna, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said Gov. Uba Sani administration remained committed to upholding the constitutional guarantee of press freedom.
Maiyaki noted that the media continued to play a vital role in democratic governance by informing citizens, shaping public discourse and strengthening accountability.
He quoted the governor as believing that a free, credible and responsible media was indispensable to peace, good governance and democratic stability.
“At a time when misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust, social cohesion and national security, ethical, accurate and responsible journalism has never been more critical,” he said.
The commissioner added that the state government would continue to protect journalists while promoting professionalism, integrity and accountability in the media space.
He emphasised that the Ministry of Information and Culture would sustain collaboration with media stakeholders, support capacity building and advance initiatives to counter misinformation and strengthen the credibility of journalism.
Maiyaki urged all stakeholders to uphold the values of truth, responsibility and mutual respect as essential foundations for a peaceful, informed and democratic society.NAN
