‘No more Mr nice guy’: US President Donald Trump warns Iran to ‘get smart soon’
He wrote, “Iran can’t get their act together. They don’t know how to sign a non-nuclear deal. They better get smart soon!,” The message was accompanied by an edited image of Trump holding an assault rifle which added to the sharp tone of his remarks.
The post came hours after Trump said that Iran is “in a state of collapse.” He also referenced Tehran’s reported push to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the key global shipping route, stating, “They want us to ‘Open the Hormuz Strait,’ as soon as possible, as they try to figure out their leadership situation (Which I believe they will be able to do!).”
Iran’s latest proposal
The warning comes as Washington reviews a new proposal from
Iran which aims at easing tensions following a fragile ceasefire in the region, Al Jazeera reported. The proposal focuses on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit route, while deferring discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme which remains the key concern of the US.
Under the plan, Tehran has offered to restore shipping through the strait, which carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. In exchange, it has demanded the lifting of the US’ naval blockade on Iranian ports and approval to end hostilities.
Iran earlier restricted movement through the passage which contributed to rising global energy prices and supply disruptions. The proposal was reportedly conveyed to the US through Pakistan which is acting as a mediator. Iranian officials have said the offer reflects key ‘red lines,’ particularly regarding nuclear negotiations and control over the Strait of Hormuz.
US’ response to proposal
Early signals from Washington suggest the proposal is unlikely to be accepted in its current form. US officials have expressed concern that postponing nuclear talks could weaken American leverage. CNN reported that Trump is dissatisfied with the absence of firm commitments on Iran’s nuclear programme.
On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News that any agreement must ensure Iran cannot move toward developing a nuclear weapon.
