INEC redeploys Wike’s cousin as Akwa Ibom REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has redeployed Anugbum Onuoha, a cousin to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State.

Onuoha took over from Obo Effanga during a handover ceremony at the INEC office in Uyo on April 17, 2026.

Before his redeployment, Onuoha served as REC in Edo State, where he oversaw the 2024 governorship election.

He was among 10 RECs appointed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023.

He previously held political and administrative roles in Rivers State, including serving as a special adviser on lands and survey under Wike.

Effanga, the outgoing REC in Akwa Ibom, has been redeployed to Edo State as part of INEC’s routine staff movements.
