Residents close to a navy camp in Bujumbura fled in panic on Tuesday evening after explosions erupted from a military ammunition depot within the Musaga space.
In accordance with military spokesperson Gaspard Baratuza, the incident was brought on by a hearth triggered by a brief circuit within the ammunition storage facility, which led to a number of detonations.
The blaze, which produced large explosions, was seen from a number of miles away, with movies circulating on social media displaying residents fleeing close by neighbourhoods.
Baratuza dismissed hypothesis that the explosion was the results of an assault, reassuring the general public that the scenario was not linked to any hostile exercise.
He urged residents of Gasekebuye, Kanyosha, Kinindo and surrounding areas to stay calm and keep away from panic as authorities labored to include the scenario.
Native officers later confirmed that calm had been restored, whereas some displaced youngsters have been quickly sheltered at Buhonga Catholic Parish awaiting reunification with their households.
The incident has raised issues over security at navy installations, although authorities preserve that the explosion was unintentional.
