The President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Godswill Akpabio, Thursday referred to as on parliaments worldwide to rise as defenders of peace, justice, and humanity, as he addressed delegates on the 152nd Meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Talking below the Meeting’s theme, “Nurturing Hope, Securing Peace and Guaranteeing Justice for Future Generations,” he famous that the gathering comes at a time of mounting international pressure, with conflicts spreading throughout areas and testing the resilience of countries and establishments.
Audio system on the opening ceremony had equally urged renewed dedication to multilateral cooperation and democratic values.
“I deliver you heat greetings from the resilient folks of Nigeria-a nation that has discovered that peace just isn’t inherited, it’s constructed, defended, and sustained,” he stated.
Drawing from Nigeria’s expertise with battle and nation-building, the Senate President said the central position of legislatures as “the primary hope of the lots” and described parliaments as “the conscience of the folks.”
He warned that no area is resistant to instability, citing ongoing conflicts throughout the Center East, Europe, and Africa, and referred to as for a worldwide shift from conflict to growth.
“It’s time to flip from destruction to building and redirect the devices of conflict in the direction of the work of growth,” he stated.
Highlighting the human price of the battle, he said that past casualty figures lie damaged households and devastated communities.
Quoting Martin Luther King Jr., he reminded delegates of humanity’s shared future and referred to as for collective motion.
