Ejigbo Magistrate Court in Lagos yesterday remanded a 60-year-old woman, Sade Abubakar, in a correctional centre over alleged theft of goods worth N2 million.
Abubakar, whose address was not disclosed, pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of stealing when the charge was read in open court.
The Magistrate, Mrs K.A Dosumu ordered her remand in custody pending sentencing, noting the need to follow due process after the guilty plea.
Dosumu adjourned the case until May 11 for review of facts and sentencing, directing that the prosecution file the necessary documents before the next hearing.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan told the court that the offence occurred in January at No. 8, Rafatu Street, Oremeji-Shasha, Lagos.
He said the defendant unlawfully entered the premises and removed valuables without consent, depriving the owner of personal belongings and financial value.
Aigbokhan said Abubakar stole jewellery, clothes, shoes and other household items collectively valued at N2 million, belonging to Mrs Ngozi Emedom.
“The offence contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” he said, while outlining the legal basis of the charge.
He added that the provision prescribes up to three years imprisonment for stealing, depending on the circumstances and the court’s discretion.
Court officials confirmed that the defendant would remain in custody at a correctional facility pending the next adjourned date for sentencing. (NAN)
