Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned President Bola Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act 2026 (Modification) into regulation, describing it as a threat to democracy in Nigeria.
Reacting shortly after the signing ceremony on the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, Sowore mentioned the regulation is “designed to undermine and in the end forbid free, honest, and credible elections in Nigeria.”
He urged Nigerians to oppose the laws, stating, “We should resist this assault on democracy. They’ve dared the folks. Now we should confront them, we should rattling their impunity.”
Politics Nigeria earlier reported that President Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Modification) at a ceremony round 5:00 p.m., with principal officers of the Nationwide Meeting in attendance.
The regulation, which governs the conduct of elections in Nigeria, comes forward of the 2027 basic elections, scheduled for February 20 for the presidential and Nationwide Meeting polls, and March 6 for governorship and State Homes of Meeting elections.
Sowore’s remarks mirror rising issues amongst opposition figures and civil society organisations that the brand new regulation might undermine transparency and equity within the electoral course of.
