Armed security personnel have taken control of the House of Assembly premises at Alausa, Ikeja, disrupting today’s planned plenary session. This development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis following the controversial impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in January.
The situation has become more complex with reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention might pave the way for Obasa’s return to the speakership. Obasa, who has rejected his impeachment, has taken legal action through his lawyers, led by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, seeking expedited hearing and interpretation of various constitutional provisions regarding his removal.
The crisis, which began with Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, shows no signs of resolution as the former speaker’s legal team pursues relief through the courts, challenging the legitimacy of his removal based on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Assembly’s Rules and Standing Order.
