Three killed, seven injured in separate road crashes in Ogun

Three people have been killed and seven others injured in two separate road accidents along the Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway and Ota–Idiroko Road in Ogun State.

The accidents occurred on Saturday at the Kam Steel axis of the Sagamu–Ikorodu Expressway and the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incidents in a traffic update.

According to Akinbiyi, the first accident occurred at about 4:10 p.m. at the Kam Steel axis, where a pickup van reportedly emerged from the Kam Steel access road onto the highway and collided with a tricycle.

The impact caused the tricycle to somersault, leaving one adult woman dead and two other women injured.

A total of eight people were involved in the crash, according to TRACE.

The injured victims were rescued and taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, while the body of the deceased was deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

In the second incident, two people, a man and a woman, were killed while five others sustained injuries in a collision involving a yellow Howo truck and a TVS tricycle at the Agarawu, Winners axis of the Ota–Idiroko Road.

Akinbiyi said the accident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. and was reportedly caused by brake failure, which resulted in the truck driver losing control of the vehicle and colliding with the tricycle.

Nine people were involved in the second crash, bringing the total number of people affected by the two accidents to 17.

The TRACE spokesperson said the injured victims had been taken to hospital before the arrival of rescue officials.

He added that relatives had claimed the body of one of the deceased, while the other was deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ifo.

TRACE operatives, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police, responded to both accident scenes and helped restore normal traffic flow.

The agency commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to prioritise road safety by ensuring their vehicles were properly maintained and roadworthy.

Akinbiyi warned that failure to service vehicles regularly, particularly those involved in commercial transportation, could have serious consequences for drivers, passengers and other road users.

The incidents have again highlighted the dangers of vehicle-related mechanical failures and road collisions along major highways in Ogun State, prompting renewed calls for motorists to observe safety regulations and ensure proper vehicle maintenance.
