Policeman kills young girl in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident that left a young girl dead and another injured in Ajegunle.

One of the victims, identified as Omole Taiwo, was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she was taken after the incident. The second girl is receiving medical attention and is in stable condition.

As gathered, the incident occurred in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle on November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the officer allegedly discharged his firearm during a police operation.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the officer had been deployed following a distress call over a violent clash between two rival groups, identified as the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, reportedly fighting over toll collection.

The groups were said to be armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the police responded to the disturbance.

“During the operation, ASP Olajide discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck the two girls,” Adebisi said.

Following the incident, the police said Olajide had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial probe.

The Command said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assured them that justice would be served.

He also vowed that no officer found culpable would be shielded, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to accountability and the protection of lives.

The police urged members of the public with relevant information about the incident to report to the nearest police station or the Command’s Public Relations Department.
