Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund maintained their strong positions at the top of the German Bundesliga table after recording 2-1 victories over Mainz and Elversberg respectively on Saturday.
Both clubs are now level on 21 points after nine matches, with defending champions Bayern occupying the top position on goal difference.
Bayern secured their victory away from home against Mainz, with Joshua Kimmich and teenage forward Lennart Karl scoring the goals.
Kimmich opened the scoring in the 14th minute after receiving a pass from Harry Kane, who intercepted a misplaced ball before setting up the midfielder to fire home.
Bayern doubled their advantage in the 57th minute when Karl converted another opportunity created by Kane.
Mainz reduced the deficit in stoppage time through Phillip Tietz, who headed home in the 90th minute plus three. However, Bayern held on to secure all three points.
The match also saw Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer make history by becoming the oldest player to represent the club at 40 years and 225 days.
However, his record-breaking appearance ended prematurely after he sustained a foot injury and was replaced by Jonas Urbig before half-time.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund defeated Elversberg 2-1 at home, with Felix Nmecha scoring twice to secure the victory.
After a goalless first half, Nmecha opened the scoring in the 55th minute following a pass from Fabio Silva.
The midfielder doubled Dortmund’s lead in the 71st minute with an impressive long-range effort.
Elversberg fought back through Noel Futkeu, who scored an acrobatic overhead kick in the 81st minute to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.
Dortmund, however, held on to claim victory and remain level with Bayern on points.
The results extend both teams’ unbeaten starts to the Bundesliga season, with Bayern maintaining their advantage at the summit through a superior goal difference.
Bayern will return to league action against Cologne on November 20, while Dortmund will also look to maintain their challenge for the title when domestic football resumes after the international break.
