Army detonates two bombs on Niger highway

Troops of the Nigerian Army have stopped two occurrences of bomb explosion in Niger State to avert possible disaster for residents in the area.

The military operatives, during a security operation, detonated two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) discovered along a highway in the state, curbing disaster on motorists and other road users.

The bombs were uncovered after the soldiers identified suspicious devices along the road corridor, after which the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was deployed to handle the situation.

A military source of the 128 Battalion operating from the Forward Operating Base, Operation Savannah Shield, held that the incident occurred along the Baturen Daji–Machan–Gyada–Masaka road and Dekara area in Borgu Local Government at about 7:00 a.m. yesterday.

The respondent on Saturday disclosed that the Army’s bomb disposal specialists successfully detonated both devices through a controlled detonation at the locations where they were found.

He added that no casualties were recorded during the exercise and that, upon the detonation, motorists and passersby were able to use the highway again.

Meanwhile, the successful operation highlights the importance of ongoing military patrols and explosive detection efforts in areas facing security threats, particularly along routes used by residents and travellers in Niger State.
