Russian Air Defence team intercepts Ukrainian long-range drone near Moscow [VIDEO]

Newly surfaced footage appears to show a Russian air-defence team intercepting a Ukrainian long-range attack drone as it approached oil infrastructure in the Moscow region.

The video, which has circulated online, reportedly captures Russian personnel using an Igla man-portable air-defence system (MANPADS) to engage a Ukrainian Liutyi long-range kamikaze drone.

According to reports accompanying the footage, the drone was flying toward a target associated with oil infrastructure when it was detected and engaged by the Russian air-defence team.

The footage shows the drone approaching the targeted area before an air-defence missile is launched against it. The interception reportedly occurred at close range, with the engagement described as taking place only moments before the drone could reach its intended target.

The Liutyi is a Ukrainian long-range unmanned aircraft designed for deep-strike missions and has been used in attacks against targets well beyond the immediate frontline. Its ability to operate at considerable distances has made long-range drones an important component of Ukraine’s campaign against Russian military and energy infrastructure.

The reported interception highlights the growing role of short-range air-defence systems in protecting strategic installations from unmanned aerial attacks.

Russia has increasingly relied on layered air-defence networks to counter Ukrainian drones, combining larger surface-to-air missile systems with electronic warfare equipment and shorter-range weapons.

The use of a MANPADS against a long-range drone also demonstrates the flexibility of ground-based air-defence units when drones are detected close to sensitive facilities.

However, the precise location, date and circumstances of the interception could not be independently verified from the footage alone, and the video does not by itself establish the identity of the personnel or confirm the intended target.

The emergence of the footage comes amid continued drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides using unmanned aircraft to strike military, energy and strategic infrastructure deep behind the front lines.

The incident underscores the increasing challenge posed by long-range drones to critical infrastructure and the continuing race between offensive drone technology and air-defence systems.
