PRP: Opposition coalition targets Tinubu’s re-election in 2027

The People’s Redemption Party has said the coalition of opposition parties it belongs to is primarily focused on defeating President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.

The PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, disclosed this in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, saying the coalition was prepared to consider different options, including collaboration among opposition parties, to achieve its objective.

“Our primary target is to remove Tinubu from office, make sure that he doesn’t come back,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He said the coalition, which includes the African Democratic Congress, PRP and other opposition parties, was working towards a stronger collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

“All options are on the table. We haven’t taken a single one off,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed said the coalition was examining the legal and political implications of the fact that the participating parties already had candidates.

He, however, said the opposition parties believed working together would give them a stronger platform than contesting the election separately.

“We feel quite confident that the coalition itself is a lot better than all parties going on their own,” he said.

The PRP chairman said discussions were already ongoing with political parties, leaders and candidates, adding that the coalition had received encouraging responses.

On the party’s campaign council, Baba-Ahmed said the PRP would announce its structure soon.

He explained that the party was taking its time to select people who could connect with ordinary Nigerians and communicate its political agenda.

“We want people who will be in that council who can relate with the ordinary citizens of our country,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed said the campaign would focus on issues including poverty, corruption, insecurity, ethnic and religious divisions and the future of young Nigerians.

He also criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the economy and security, citing reports of kidnappings and killings across the country.

According to him, the security situation requires stronger leadership and closer engagement with affected communities.

He said Nigerians had become poorer and more insecure under the present administration, while also alleging that the country was becoming increasingly divided along ethnic and religious lines.

Baba-Ahmed said the coalition was therefore seeking to mobilise Nigerians around an alternative political platform ahead of the 2027 election.

“We voted Tinubu in good faith. He has let us down. He has let the country down. He has let the poor down,” he said.

He further argued that another four years of the Tinubu administration would worsen the country’s challenges.

“If we give Tinubu and APC another four years to continue doing what they are doing to us now, they won’t do anything different,” Baba-Ahmed said.

The PRP leader maintained that the coalition would continue consultations with opposition parties as it works towards a common strategy for the 2027 elections.
