The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has sealed the headquarters of Kaduna Electric in Kaduna State over alleged outstanding statutory tax liabilities.
The enforcement followed the company’s alleged failure to fulfil its tax obligations despite previous notifications from the revenue authority.
As part of the enforcement action, the NRS placed a non-compliance notice at the premises of Kaduna Electric.
It was gathered on Monday that the notice at the company’s headquarters in Kaduna metropolis, where customers were reportedly asked to leave as no staff were available to attend to them.
The enforcement was authorised by the NRS Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, under the provisions of the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act and other applicable tax laws.
The notice stated that the owners and operators of the premises had failed to comply with their statutory obligations.
It also warned that officers or agents who violated tax regulations could face prosecution and other penalties prescribed by law.
An official of Kaduna Electric, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the notice had been placed at the company’s premises.
The official added that the absence of staff prevented the company from attending to customers.
The NRS further warned against tampering with the sealed notice or interfering with the enforcement process without authorisation.
It directed affected taxpayers seeking clarification or resolution to approach its Debt Management and Enforcement Department in Abuja or the nearest enforcement office.
The development comes amid wider regulatory challenges facing Kaduna Electric, formerly known as Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO).
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had recently dissolved the company’s board and appointed an interim management team following what it described as operational inefficiencies, failure to meet capital expenditure targets and cumulative market debt exceeding ₦456.5 billion.
Under the interim arrangement, Abubakar Umar Hashidu was appointed administrator to oversee operations across Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states while the company undergoes restructuring.
