Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has opened up about the pressures of celebrity life, revealing that he once went through a difficult period he could not publicly discuss.

Mayorkun said entertainers are often expected to maintain a strong and happy public image, making it difficult for them to admit when they are struggling.

In an interview monitored by PerSecondNews on Instagram, he said: “I was once in a very bad state and couldn’t come out to tell about it because entertainers like me are not expected to come and show that we are weak or not happy”.

According to the singer, celebrities are expected to constantly project the glamorous side of their lives, even when their reality may be completely different.

“We have to keep showing that soft side, the celebrity standard, the good moments,” Mayorkun said.

He pointed to the gap between what entertainers portray in their music and videos and what they may actually be experiencing privately.

“Sometimes you will see celebrities saying we have this or that in their songs and videos but he has not even eaten in two days,” he said.

The singer’s comments shed light on the less visible pressures of the entertainment industry, where maintaining appearances can sometimes take precedence over acknowledging personal struggles.

Mayorkun also spoke about his approach to music, saying he holds himself to a high standard and would not knowingly release a song he considers poor.

“I can’t make wack songs,” he said, noting that while listeners may have different opinions about his work, he remains conscious of the quality of what he puts out.

“I know some people will say this song is this or that but I don’t think I can make any song that won’t make me sleep at night because some people feel somehow about it,” he added.
