A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after checking into a hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Jacob, who was described by the police as a commercial sex worker, had lodged at the hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in the Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying three people had been arrested in connection with the lecturer’s death.
According to her, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman before later sending her to purchase water.
“On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,” she said.
Following the incident, the hotel owner, manager and Jacob were arrested and remained in police custody as investigations continued.
The police spokesperson added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Confirming Uwuigbe’s identity as a staff member of Ambrose Alli University, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Ade Aladenika, said the incident occurred outside the university premises.
Aladenika said the university was aware that Uwuigbe was a member of its staff but described the circumstances surrounding his death as a private matter.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
