FCT police probes officer over N450,000 extortion

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Commissioner, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered an investigation into allegations that a police officer demanded N450,000 from a complainant for “mobilisation and petition” during an investigation.

The probe followed a claim by a content creator identified as Tumma Gabriel that he was asked to provide the money while pursuing a case at the FCT Police Command Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the command strongly condemned any act of soliciting or demanding money before, during or after investigations.

“The Command wishes to state clearly that it strongly condemns such acts and does not encourage its officers to solicit or demand any form of remuneration before, during, or after investigations,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police directed a thorough probe to identify any officer who may be linked to the alleged demand, adding that anyone found culpable would be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations.

The command also appealed to the complainant to assist the investigation by contacting the police through its official line and visiting the Command Headquarters to provide information that could help identify the officer or officers involved.

The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and transparency in the discharge of its duties.
