Biola Fagbolagun wins gold in female table tennis at Lagos NUJ Media Games

Biola Fagbolagun of Lagos Traffic Radio has emerged champion in the female table tennis competition at the 2026 Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Media Games.

Fagbolagun, who covers the Lagos State House of Assembly for the radio station, defeated Menanya Anulika of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) in two straight sets, winning 13-11, 13-11 to clinch the gold medal.

The competition, which attracted journalists and members of the union, was held at the Lagos NUJ Secretariat, Iyala, Alausa, Ikeja, on Wednesday, October 7.

Speaking after the competition, Fagbolagun expressed delight over her victory, describing the achievement as a result of determination, hard work and the support she received from colleagues and supporters.

She thanked the organisers, participants, NUJ executives, members of the union and everyone who supported her throughout the competition.

She said, “I want to thank the organisers of the event, the players, the executive members of the union, all the members and my supporters.

“I sincerely appreciate everyone who contributed in one way or another to making this competition a success.”

The table tennis champion also commended the Lagos NUJ for sustaining the annual media games, noting that sporting activities provide journalists with an opportunity to exercise, relax and strengthen relationships among members.

According to her, “Sports is very important because, as journalists, we spend a lot of time working and reporting events.

“We also need to take care of our bodies, and sporting activities give us the opportunity to exercise and stay active.”

Fagbolagun urged more journalists to participate in sporting activities, stressing that the NUJ Media Games should continue to serve as a platform for promoting friendship and unity among media practitioners.

She also appealed to corporate organisations and other potential sponsors to support the annual event financially and materially.

“I would like to appeal to corporate organisations to join the Lagos NUJ in supporting and sponsoring the media games. With more support, the event can become bigger, more interesting and more rewarding for members every year,” she said.

Fagbolagun expressed appreciation to her colleagues and supporters for standing by her during the competition, saying their encouragement contributed to her confidence.

“I thank God for the victory, and I am grateful to my supporters and colleagues for standing by me throughout the competition. Their encouragement means a lot to me,” she added.

She promised to remain committed to the sport and continue improving her skills ahead of future editions of the NUJ Media Games.

“I hope to keep winning in the future, but more importantly, I want to continue participating and encouraging other journalists to take sports seriously,” Fagbolagun said.

The Lagos NUJ Media Games, an annual sporting event organised for journalists and media practitioners in the state, features competitions designed to promote physical fitness, camaraderie and healthy competition among members of the union.
