A mother of three, Safiya Usman, on Wednesday dragged her ex-husband, Umar Abubakar, before a Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, seeking an increase in their children’s maintenance fee.
Usman told the court that the children – two girls aged 13 and seven, and a boy aged three are in her custody and prayed the court to order Abubakar to provide accommodation for them.
She said Abubakar provides N2,500 daily for the children’s feeding, which she argued was inadequate to provide three square meals, and prayed the court to increase the amount to N3,500 daily.
The complainant added that apart from the feeding allowance of N105,000 monthly, the defendant should also be responsible for their school fees, hospital bills, and clothing.
She further told the court that she needed accommodation for the children because the house she shares with her mother could no longer contain them.
The defendant, however, said he could only afford N2,500 daily and that he also pays their school fees.
He requested one month to secure accommodation for the children.
Usman denied his claims, insisting that Abubakar, who is a driver, could afford N105,000 monthly and does not pay the children’s school fees.
The Judge, Malam Mu’awiyya Shehu, adjourned the case to Oct. 12 for the complainant to provide evidence that the defendant could afford N105,000 monthly and for the defendant to provide proof of payment of the children’s school fees.(NAN)
