A new position statement by the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields (ICBE-EMF) has reignited debate over the health implications of children’s exposure to wireless technologies, raising questions about the adequacy of existing safety standards and the growing use of connected devices in schools.
The 23-page statement, released on September 9, cites more than 100 published scientific studies that the organisation says document potential health risks associated with electromagnetic fields (EMFs) at exposure levels permitted under current United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations.
The findings have prompted calls for governments, schools and technology companies to reassess how wireless devices are deployed around children and whether existing safeguards adequately reflect scientific evidence.
Wireless Devices Under Scrutiny
According to ICBE-EMF, mobile phones, tablets and other connected devices expose users to EMFs through wireless communications, electrical components and charging systems. The organisation argues that prolonged screen use and exposure to wireless radiation deserve greater attention, particularly among children whose brains and physiological systems are still developing.
The statement links excessive screen use to a range of concerns, including sleep disruption, impaired cognitive function, poorer academic performance, social and emotional difficulties, visual health problems and cardiometabolic complications. It also identifies potential associations with chronic diseases, including diabetes.
However, the organisation’s claims about wireless radiation require careful examination. Although research has investigated possible health effects from radiofrequency radiation, the evidence does not establish that ordinary exposure from wireless devices causes all the conditions identified in the statement.

Screen-related problems can also involve sedentary behaviour, disrupted sleep, prolonged close-up viewing and other factors.
Children Face Particular Concerns
ICBE-EMF maintains that children may be more vulnerable to wireless radiation than adults because of differences in brain development, body size and tissue absorption. It argues that the current approach to exposure limits does not sufficiently account for these differences.
The organisation is calling for stronger protections in schools, including routine monitoring of EMF levels in and around school buildings. It recommends that local education authorities establish teams to assess exposure and adopt measures to keep levels as low as reasonably possible.
“Schools should be safe environments for learning,” the group stated, warning that the widespread use of Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, tablets, smartboards and mobile phones has increased wireless technology exposure in classrooms.
Schools and Governments Under Pressure
The statement comes amid growing concern in the United States about the impact of excessive screen use on children’s development.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently held a symposium focused on the potential harms of excessive screen use and the importance of non-screen activities. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also called for greater attention to children’s real-world experiences.

The U.S. Surgeon General has separately warned about risks associated with excessive social media use among young people and provided resources to help families, schools and communities promote healthier digital habits.
While these initiatives focus primarily on screen use and digital behaviour, ICBE-EMF is urging policymakers to broaden the discussion to include wireless radiation and the physical environments in which children learn.
Miriam Eckenfels, director of the Children’s Health Defense Electromagnetic Radiation & Wireless Program, said parents, schools and policymakers should reconsider the extent to which children rely on screens at home and in educational settings.

Data Centres Add to the Debate
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and data centres has introduced another dimension to the discussion.
ICBE-EMF argues that the growth of energy-intensive data centres could increase children’s exposure to electromagnetic fields associated with electricity infrastructure, including power lines and substations.
The organisation cited a report by The 74 indicating that nearly 1,900 U.S. public schools are located within one mile of a data centre.
It further contends that extremely low-frequency EMFs associated with electrical infrastructure may be linked to increased leukemia risks. Such claims remain an area of scientific investigation, and the presence of a data centre near a school does not, by itself, establish that children face a specific health hazard.
The organisation is calling for governments to review exposure standards to reflect the realities of modern life, including the proliferation of wireless devices, communications infrastructure and electricity demand.
In May, Children’s Health Defense filed a case against the FCC in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
The organisation is seeking an order compelling the agency to comply with a 2021 court mandate concerning its explanation of how existing wireless radiation exposure limits protect human health and the environment.
The case, identified as CHD et al. v. FCC, seeks a writ of mandamus directing the FCC to act within 90 days.
The legal challenge places renewed focus on the scientific basis of wireless exposure regulations and the responsibility of regulators to review safety standards as technology and scientific research evolve.
For parents and educators, the debate highlights the importance of healthier digital habits, appropriate screen limits and evidence-based school technology policies. For regulators, it raises questions about whether existing exposure standards adequately address emerging scientific concerns and the changing technological landscape.
