U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson has said that President Donald Trump’s proposal to distribute $5,000 “Trump Dividend” cheques to adult Americans would require congressional approval.
Trump announced the proposal at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, promising the payments if the party retains control of the House and Senate. He said the initiative would be funded through tariffs, investment gains and other government revenue.
The plan could cost more than $1.2 trillion and has faced bipartisan concerns over its potential impact on inflation and the federal deficit. Johnson said Congress would consider the proposal and work toward reaching a consensus.
