President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.
Jacobs’ death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, prompting tributes from across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and beyond.
In a condolence statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished actors and a major figure whose career extended across theatre, television and international film.
The President said Jacobs played an important role in the growth and professional development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, while his performances influenced generations of actors and filmmakers.
Tinubu also highlighted the late actor’s ability to give his characters depth and authenticity, qualities he said helped earn Jacobs widespread respect both in Nigeria and internationally.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts,” Tinubu said.
The President added that Jacobs’ body of work would continue to influence future generations and acknowledged the wider contribution of Nigerian creative professionals to the country’s cultural identity, international reputation and economy.
According to the statement, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London before building experience in British television and international film.
He later returned to Nigeria, where he became one of the prominent figures in the country’s developing film industry.
Throughout his career, Jacobs received several honours for his contribution to the performing arts and was also awarded the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Jacobs’ family, including his wife and fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and other relatives.

He also commiserated with Jacobs’ colleagues and members of Nigeria’s wider creative community.
The President prayed for the repose of the actor’s soul and offered his condolences to all those mourning his death.
