The Ondo State Police Command has opened an investigation into the deaths of 24 residents in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, amid suspicion that the victims may have died after consuming a poisonous substance.
The deaths have been linked to suspected poisoning, with the police working to determine whether a particular herbal preparation, alcoholic drink or another substance was responsible.
Investigators and medical personnel from the Police Medical Services are collaborating with officials of the state Ministry of Health and the Odigbo Local Government health authorities to collect evidence and conduct relevant examinations.
The command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said on Wednesday that the ongoing tests were necessary to establish the actual cause of the deaths and identify any substance that may have contributed to the fatalities.
“The Command is working with the Ondo State Government and relevant health authorities to determine the actual cause of the reported deaths. Medical and toxicological examinations are also being conducted,” he said.
The police warned residents against spreading unverified claims or blaming any particular product for the deaths before the conclusion of laboratory analyses.
The command also urged residents of the affected communities to remain calm and provide useful information to investigators.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Felix Ohagwu, assured the public that the command would thoroughly investigate the incident and take appropriate action against anyone found culpable.
He added that further information would be released as credible findings emerge.
