Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has promised to bring back petroleum subsidy if he wins the 2027 election.
He said his government would start by dealing with corruption.
Obi spoke on Monday at a town hall in Sokoto for the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket.
He said the real problem behind the subsidy talk is corruption, and once that is removed subsidy can return.
He named corruption as the biggest problem in the country and promised to stop it in every sector.
He asked Nigerians to vote for NDC candidates at every level in 2027 and said fixing the country is a shared duty.
He described the party as one of care and service.
Obi also said he would use the nation’s resources to improve security, education and other areas, adding that education is his top priority after unity and security.
He promised to link all state capitals by rail to boost business and development.
Vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso said the team came to Sokoto to meet residents and ask for their support.
He said they had earlier visited the Sultan of Sokoto, who prayed for their success and sent his good wishes.
Kwankwaso noted that many parts of the country face insecurity, with the North-West hit hard by banditry and kidnapping, and promised to help fix it.
The party’s Sokoto governorship candidate, Shamsudeen Haido, promised good governance if elected.
State chairman Bello Yabo said the event gave residents a chance to hear directly from Obi and Kwankwaso about their plans for the country.
