Lawyers charging clients dollars, pounds risk prosecution – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned legal practitioners across the country against the illegal and unethical practice of charging clients in foreign currencies, saying offenders risk prosecution.

The Commission said the practice contravenes existing laws and warned that anyone found engaging in it would face investigation and possible prosecution.

EFCC disclosed this in a post on its official X account on Monday, following a meeting between its Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 and a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The Acting Zonal Director of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE I) Bawa Kaltungo, raised the concern during an interactive session with the delegation, led by its Head, Moshood Abiola.

Kaltungo expressed concern over the involvement of some lawyers in what he described as illegal and unethical practices.

He stressed that the anti-graft agency would not hesitate to investigate and prosecute anyone found culpable, regardless of profession or status.

“The Commission would not hesitate to prosecute anyone found culpable,” Kaltungo said.

He also emphasised the need for legal practitioners to uphold professional ethics and comply with relevant laws governing financial transactions in the country.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the EFCC and the NBA delegation to discuss issues affecting the legal profession and efforts to curb unlawful practices within the sector.
