Lagos police disburses N89m to deceased officers’ families

The Lagos State Police Command has disbursed ₦89.2 million to families and next-of-kin of 157 deceased police officers who served under the Command.

The cheques represent claims under the welfare and insurance schemes of the Nigeria Police Force, aimed at providing financial support to families of officers who lost their lives in the course of service.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebesi, yesterday.

Presenting the cheques at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said the gesture underscored the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, under Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to the welfare of its personnel and families of fallen officers.

Fatai stated that although the financial assistance could not replace the lives of the deceased officers, it demonstrated the Force’s determination to honour their sacrifices and ensure that their families were not abandoned after their death.

He sympathised with the beneficiaries and urged them to make judicious use of the funds, particularly for the education and welfare of the children and other dependants left behind by the deceased officers.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to facilitating the prompt processing of legitimate welfare and insurance claims owed to families of deceased personnel.

He assured serving officers that their welfare, as well as that of their families, remained a priority of the Nigeria Police Force, adding that the financial support would provide some relief to families affected by the loss of their loved ones.

The Lagos Police Command expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for the intervention and extended its sympathy and continued support to the beneficiaries.
