Lagos Govt. arrests resident for dumping waste into drainage

The Lagos State Government has arrested a resident of Meiran for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall, following a tip-off received by an enforcement team.

The arrest was made during a joint enforcement operation involving the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) and Mobile Police officers attached to the team.

In a statement on Wednesday, LAWMA Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the suspect, who resides at No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, Lagos, was arrested at the location following information about the alleged offence.

Gbadegesin said the suspect was allegedly caught dumping waste into a drainage channel while it was raining, an act capable of obstructing the free flow of stormwater and worsening flooding.

He added that the suspect had been taken to the KAI headquarters for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the state’s environmental regulations.

The agency urged residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly dumping refuse in drainage channels, warning that such practices can block waterways and contribute significantly to flooding during heavy rainfall.
