Gunmen have killed Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, an aide to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, during a violent confrontation in Ile-Ife.
Oyeyemi was reportedly shot during a clash between rival groups fighting for control of a motor park in the ancient city.
The incident occurred around 10am on Sunday at the Mayfair motor park in Ile-Ife, before the violence spread to motor parks around Sabo and Lagere, where sporadic gunshots were heard.
An eyewitness said Oyeyemi was leading his loyalists when the confrontation erupted over an alleged attempt to take control of the Mayfair motor park.
The violence reportedly lasted for more than 20 minutes, forcing residents, traders, motorists and other people in the affected areas to flee for safety.
A video circulating online showed the deceased inside a vehicle after the shooting, with blood visible on his clothing and body.
Following the killing, Adeleke ordered the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to investigate the incident and apprehend those behind the attack.
The governor also directed the immediate vacation of the affected motor parks by the rival groups and charged security agencies with restoring peace and preventing further clashes.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the state would reintroduce the Park Management System to regulate motor parks and garages across Osun.
The governor appealed for calm and vowed that all those found culpable would face the law, directing security agencies to maintain law and order in Ile-Ife and other affected parts of the state.
