A gang of gunmen has killed nine people during an attack on a commercial bus in Plateau State community.
The attackers ambushed the victims, firing gunshots at them which resulted to their death and severe gunshot wounds on others, sparking fresh concerns over the safety of travellers along the route.
Reports reveal that the attack turned the bus into a scene of bloodshed, with bullet marks visible on its body following the incident which occurred at Dungus Junction in Kuru community, in Jos South Local Government Area at about 9:40 p.m. yesterday, when the driver stopped to drop off some passengers.
Lawan Suleiman, a neighbour and teacher of one of the victims, confirmed the deaths and identified the driver as Ibrahim, saying some of the victims were from Bukuru community.
He said three victims from the community had their remains deposited at a hospital, while their relatives were making arrangements to take the bodies for burial.
Similarly, Rwang Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders, described the incident as a tragic development and confirmed that the victims were travelling towards Jos.
Tengwong said one of those killed was a member of Operation Rainbow, while other passengers who survived the attack suffered gunshot injuries.
Some of the wounded victims were taken to hospitals for treatment, although some later died from injuries sustained during the attack.
The Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
