Super Eagles have arrived in Bissau ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea-Bissau, carrying the momentum of their 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in their opening Group L fixture.
Nigeria fell behind in the 16th minute when Madagascar’s Ehsan Kari found the net, but George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time before fellow debutant Moses Usor completed the comeback in the second half.
Stanley Nwabali also played an important role in keeping Nigeria in the contest, making a crucial save to deny Madagascar’s Rayan Raveloson before Usor’s winner secured all three points for Éric Chelle’s side.
Following the victory in Uyo, the Super Eagles held a closed training session on Sunday morning before leaving for the airport in the afternoon and travelling to Bissau for their second Group L encounter.
Guinea-Bissau will enter the match with three points of their own after defeating Tanzania 2-0 in their opening qualifier. The result put the Wild Dogs top of the group on goal difference ahead of the second round of fixtures.
Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are both therefore looking for a second successive victory, while Tanzania and Madagascar will meet in the other Group L fixture on Tuesday.
With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament’s co-hosts, the other three teams in the group are competing for the available qualifying place.
The Super Eagles have faced Guinea-Bissau in previous AFCON qualifying matches. During the 2023 qualifying campaign, the Djurtus won 1-0 in Abuja before Nigeria responded with a 1-0 victory in Bissau.
Chelle is expected to oversee another training session in Bissau on Monday as the team completes preparations for Tuesday’s encounter at the Estádio 24 de Setembro.
The match will kick off at 5pm Nigerian time, with Nigeria aiming to build on its opening victory and strengthen its position in Group L.
