Police in Enugu State have arrested the owner of an uncompleted building after its concrete water reservoir collapsed and k!lled five members of a neighbouring family.
The incident happened on September 18 in the early morning at Umuike-Aja Village in Awgu Local Government Area.
The reservoir attached to the building fell onto the adjoining house of resident Raphael Onwu, his wife, his mother and two children.
All five d!ed in the collapse.
Police and emergency responders reached the scene and rescued a nine-year-old boy who was trapped.
He was taken to hospital for treatment.
The five d£ad were transported to hospital where they were pronounced d£ad before being moved to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The building owner, Nkwo Onyedikachi Geoffrey, has been arrested.
The police commissioner has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
The commissioner extended condolences to the bereaved family and community, assuring them that appropriate action will follow the investigation’s findings.
He urged the public to avoid unsafe construction and to follow approved safety standards by hiring qualified professionals for all building projects.
