The Enugu State Government has informed that there would be a restriction of movement on residents in the area during the forthcoming local government election.
The information was passed in an issued statement revealing that all forms of vehicular movement would cease from 6am till 4pm during the election date, cautioning the inhabitants to key into the directive for a serene election exercise.
In the circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia on Thursday, the executive arm revealed that it has involved the police to enforce compliance over the directive for the polls which is expected to produce council chairmen in the 17 local governments in the area and also confirm holders of 260 councillorship seats.
“The Government of Enugu State hereby announces a restriction of vehicular movement and other forms of transportation across the State from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
“Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of this directive and to maintain law and order throughout the elections,” the statement added
The government held that the measure was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly, secure and hitch-free franchise, although it added that the ruling is in exemption of accredited election personnel, security agencies authorized media practitioners, health workers, and others specifically assigned to carry out election or emergency duties.
It expressed apologies for the inconvenience the restriction may have on their daily activities and appealed for understanding and cooperation.
The Police Commissioner, Mamman Giwa, barred quasi-security outfits from participating in the poll, and directed armed security personnel on VIP escort duties not to escort VIP’s to polling units.
Giwa assured that the police would collaborate with other security agencies to ensure security during the poll, calling on all eligible persons to come out en-masse to perform their franchise.
The CP warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against electoral malpractices and acts capable of disrupting the peaceful conduct of the elections, stressing that violators would face the full weight of the law.
“The electorate and the public are urged to promptly report suspicious persons and activities capable of undermining the peaceful conduct of the elections to the nearest Police Station or call 08032003702, 08086671202 or 08021709005,” he stated.
