Brighton have extinguished Arsenal’s nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier League following an emphatic 3-0 home win.
The Seagulls secured the win over the champions courtesy of a goal from Pascal Gross after half an hour played, and another on the eve of halftime by Charalampos Kostoulas before Chema Andres completed the rout into the second half to cap a sublime performance for the south coast based side.
Arsenal, during the game held at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, were not allowed to settle and were deservedly pegged back on 31st minute when midfielder, Pascal Gross, shot from the edge of the box that went in off the post.
The red and white side forced their best chance to equalise on a counter-attack just before half-time, but Bukayo Saka did not take the opportunity after the ball fell to him in the area following Martin Odegaard’s deflected effort.
Seconds later, the Gunners were made to pay for the missed opportunity az Brighton doubled their lead. Kostoulas found himself in space on the edge of box and then swiftly turned to fire past David Raya who has conceded four goals in five games in the competition this campaign.
Arsenal began the second half looking to make amends to the scoreline but Brighton had more cushion as Andres headed in the third 12 minutes into the second half from a Gross corner.
Defender, Pascal Struijk, almost added a fourth from another corner, but headed wide under pressure, Kai Havertz had a late opportunity to pull one back for Arsenal but shot straight at opposition keeper, Bart Verbruggen, when through on goal to further show Arsenal’s wobbling performance.
The defeat currently leaves the defending champions second in the table on 12 points, same as Manchester City, having played one game than the Mancunians who host Sunderland on Sunday.
Winners, Brighton, moved up a spot behind Arsenal in third on 10 points ahead of the international break and would return for a league fixture on Saturday, October 10, for an away clash with Sunderland.
Arsenal are billed to play Leeds United at home on the same day in an earlier kickoff.
