Borno Govt. deploys 925 forest guards against terrorists

The Borno State Government has deployed 925 newly trained Forest Guards to support ongoing counterterrorism and security operations across the state.

The personnel, drawn from the 27 local government areas of the state, were handed over to the Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) after completing a two-week theatre acclimatisation programme at the North-East Theatre Training School (NETTS), Buni Yadi, Yobe State.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony yesterday, Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, said the Forest Guard initiative was established to provide structured auxiliary support to the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

Zulum said the 925 personnel would be deployed by the Theatre Command based on operational requirements, adding that their knowledge of the local terrain, languages and culture would enhance their effectiveness as force multipliers in security operations.

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, said the Forest Guards would complement ongoing military operations and strengthen counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts in the state.

“Their training and knowledge of the local terrain will complement ongoing military operations and enhance the effectiveness of counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts,” Ajose said.

He urged the guards to remain fearless, decisive and professional in the discharge of their duties, while warning them against harassing civilians or engaging in rivalry with other security agencies.

Ajose said the personnel must remain focused on the common threat posed by terrorists and other criminal elements, while demonstrating courage and discipline in carrying out their responsibilities.

He commended the Borno State Government for its sustained support for security efforts and reaffirmed the commitment of Operation HADIN KAI to maintaining pressure on terrorists and working with relevant stakeholders to restore peace and normalcy in the North-East.

Earlier, the Commandant of NETTS, Brigadier General Amadike Onaogu, said the training was designed to build the confidence, resilience, discipline and adaptability required of the Forest Guards in their supporting role.

He explained that the programme was not intended to turn the personnel into soldiers but to equip them with the skills needed to effectively complement security operations within their areas of responsibility.
