THE Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare says the seven-year-old girl,
who was allegedly abused by her mother, is now receiving medical treatment and psychosocial support.
The Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Chinyere Onyekesi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
Onyekesi said the child, who had been in protective custody, was under close medical observation by health personnel monitoring her recovery.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oluebube Ofoma was rescued from her mother, Mrs Ogechi Ofoma, 32, who allegedly inflicted bodily injuries on her with a hot knife.
The incident happened in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state on September 13.
The commissioner expressed relief over the child’s condition and promised that the ministry would continue to provide the necessary medical and emotional support to help her recover and regain stability.
She commended the medical team for its intervention and affirmed that the case was under active investigation by the Awada Police Division.
The commissioner said that the ministry would continue to work with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection of vulnerable children and bring perpetrators of child abuse to justice.
She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect, exploitation or violence to the appropriate authorities.
Onyekesi reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment under the administration of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo to protect the rights, safety and wellbeing of children in the state. (NAN)
