Alex Otti Reveals What He Plans to Do After Leaving Office
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said he plans to leave active politics after completing his tenure, saying younger Nigerians should be given the opportunity to take up leadership roles.
Otti made the remarks on Thursday in Umuahia while speaking about the importance of good governance and the need for a new generation to participate in political leadership.
The governor said he would not seek another political position after his time in office, including a seat in the Senate.
“Once I finish this one, I will retire,” Otti said, explaining that he wanted younger people to take over leadership.
He also rejected the idea of becoming a political godfather, saying he had no interest in controlling political succession or building a political structure around himself.
“I don’t want to be a godfather. And I don’t tolerate godfathers,” he said.
Otti argued that citizens who experience effective governance would be less willing to accept a return to what he described as the old order.
He said that after his tenure, the focus should be on identifying capable people who can continue leading the state rather than allowing one individual or political figure to dominate leadership.
The governor also criticised the practice of political leaders remaining in positions of influence for extended periods, calling for greater opportunities for younger people.
“We should stop this sit-tight; it’s only you,” Otti said, adding that there were younger Nigerians who were better trained and equipped to contribute to governance.
His comments come as political activity around the 2027 elections continues to develop. Otti has previously spoken about the 2027 election in the context of completing projects, while recent political claims about his position on the presidential contest have not amounted to a direct public endorsement from the governor.

For now, Otti says his stated plan is to complete his tenure and step away from active politics, while encouraging younger Nigerians to take up leadership responsibilities.
