THE Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation, a Lagos-based charity organisation has disbursed N2.5 million as financial educational support to 22 orphans and less-privileged children in Zamfara.
The Executive Director of the Foundation, Sulayman Olagunju presented the annual financial support to the beneficiaries of the foundation in Gusau on Sunday.
Olagunju was represented by the Zamfara State coordinator of the foundation, Malam Ibrahim Tudu.
He said the gesture was aimed at helping the orphans and children from the less-privileged families to acquire both Qur’anic and western education.
According to him, the foundation provides educational support and scholarships to indigent students, orphans, and less-privileged children across Nigeria.
“We are distributing the sum of N2.5 million to the 22 selected beneficiaries.
“The financial support covers their school fees, uniforms, writing materials and other educational expenses.
“The beneficiaries comprised orphans and less privileged children from both public and private schools,” he said.
He noted that the foundation is a charity foundation being funded through the zakkat and waqf from well-meaning individuals.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zakat and Waqf are two main tools of Islamic giving.
While Zakat is a mandatory yearly tax on wealth, Waqf is a permanent gift of property or money for ongoing public good.
Olagunju said the foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting social welfare and economic empowerment to vulnerable children.
“We place much emphasis on orphans and vulnerable children.
“supporting these students is not just charity, but an investment in the future of the society.
“This support is a testament to the foundation’s dedication to ensuring that no deserving student is deprived of education due to financial constraints,” he explained.
He said apart from providing financial assistance, the foundation was also providing school uniforms and writing materials.
“Under our productive Zakkat project, we are also empowering vulnerable youths and small scale traders to become self-reliant.
“In Zamfara, we recently provided capital of N1 million to two small scale traders, each of them got N500,000 to empower them to become self-reliant,” he added.
Also speaking, one of the female Islamic scholars in the state, Malama Fadimatu Hassan commended the foundation for its commitment to supporting education.
Hassan urged the beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity and strive for excellence.(NAN)
