Why Arsenal were forced to start Premier League title defense without star summer signing

Premier League champions Arsenal were forced to begin their title defence without their star summer signing

Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City, but one of the club’s summer arrivals was missing from the squad.

Bruno Guimaraes was unavailable after suffering a minor groin problem in his first start for the Gunners during their Community Shield triumph over Manchester City.

Why was Guimaraes missing against Coventry?

Guimaraes started Arsenal’s 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City last weekend but was withdrawn at half-time after experiencing discomfort.

The Brazilian was subsequently pictured with an ice pack strapped to his right thigh, raising concerns about his availability for the Premier League opener. Mikel Arteta later provided an explanation for the midfielder’s absence, revealing that Guimaraes had suffered a slight groin tension.

“He had a slight tension in his groin. He hasn’t done a pre-season, he only had four or five days before that [Man City] game. We have to take a lot of new stuff for him as well. We need to take it bit by bit.” Arteta said before kick-off.

Guimaraes only had a handful of days to prepare after joining Arsenal and was thrown into action against City. With a long Premier League campaign ahead, Arteta opted against taking unnecessary risks with his new midfielder.

His absence meant Declan Rice returned to the starting XI, partnering Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield.

Arsenal cruise to victory without their new signing

Whatever concerns Guimaraes’ absence may have caused, Arsenal showed they had plenty of quality available as they opened their title defence with a convincing win.

The Gunners took control after a defensive mistake from Coventry, with Riccardo Calafiori winning possession from Milan van Ewijk before setting up Kai Havertz to open the scoring.

Arsenal doubled their advantage before half-time when Rice won possession and quickly switched play towards Christos Tzolis. The winger delivered a precise low cross into the box, allowing Bukayo Saka to calmly finish at the far post.

Martin Ødegaard then put the result beyond doubt after the interval. The Arsenal captain found the net after Ben White overlapped and delivered a cutback, completing a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Martinelli was absent from the matchday squad amid continued uncertainty over his future, while Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira and Reiss Nelson were also left out as Arsenal look to make further changes before the transfer window closes.

For Guimaraes, the priority will now be recovery and gradually building his fitness. After his brief introduction to Arsenal football against Manchester City, the Brazilian will hope his groin issue proves nothing more than a minor setback as the champions prepare for a demanding campaign.
