The move came after US intelligence detected a credible threat from Iran and allied groups involving a possible missile attack on the aircraft carrying Trump from Ankara.
The incident put the spotlight on Air Force One, the highly customised aircraft used by the US President.
What Is Air Force One?
Technically, ‘Air Force One’ is the call sign used for any US Air Force aircraft carrying the President. However, the term is commonly used to “refer to specific planes that are equipped to transport the Commander-in-Chief,” according to The White House.
The current Air Force One fleet consists of two customised VC-25A aircraft, based on the Boeing 747-200B, with tail numbers 28000 and 29000.
Air Force One is equipped with advanced secure communications systems, allowing the aircraft to function as a mobile command centre during any attack on the US. It is fitted with multiple defence systems designed to detect and respond to potential threats.
Space Inside
The aircraft has around 4,000 square feet of interior space spread across three levels. It includes areas for the President, senior advisers, Secret Service personnel, travelling press and other guests.
Private Presidential Suite
The President has a private suite with a bedroom, bathroom, office and conference room. The space is designed to provide privacy while also allowing the President to continue official work during flights. There are also areas for senior advisers, Secret Service personnel, travelling journalists and other members of the President’s team.
Built For Secure Communication
The aircraft is equipped with advanced secure communication systems that allow the President to remain in contact with government officials while travelling.
According to the White House, its onboard electronics are also hardened to protect against an electromagnetic pulse. This allows Air Force One to serve as a mobile command centre during a crisis.
Medical Facility On Board
Air Force One has a medical suite that can function as an operating room. A doctor is also permanently available on board, providing medical support to the President and other passengers when required.
How Much Food Can It Prepare?
The aircraft has two food preparation galleys, which can prepare meals for up to 100 people.
Can Air Force One Refuel Mid-Air?
According to the White House, Air Force One is capable of mid-air refuelling, giving the aircraft the ability to travel long distances.
Boeing’s Long Association With Presidential Travel
Boeing has supplied aircraft for US presidential travel for decades. The company says its aircraft have transported American presidents since 1943, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt travelled aboard a Boeing 314 Clipper.
The current VC-25A is based on the Boeing 747-200, while the next-generation VC-25B is being developed using the Boeing 747-8 platform.
Other Aircraft Can Support The Presidential Trip
Air Force One does not necessarily travel alone. The White House says cargo aircraft typically fly ahead of the presidential plane to provide vehicles and other services needed at locations where the President will travel.
More Than Just A Presidential Plane
Air Force One combines transportation, communication, security, medical support and government operations in one aircraft. Its design allows the US President to continue working and remain connected with officials even while travelling across the world.
