Iran and the US remain deadlocked over efforts to permanently end the five-month-old war, with a senior Iranian source saying there has been “absolutely no progress” towards reviving the interim agreement reached in June. Follow for the latest updates.
The diplomatic impasse deepened as US President Donald Trump again attacked Iran’s leadership, declaring that Washington had “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz and describing Tehran as “all talk and no action”.
Iran, however, maintains that the crucial waterway will remain blocked until the US lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, releases frozen Iranian assets and accepts its other conditions. The June agreement had called for an immediate end to military operations and provided a 60-day window to negotiate a broader settlement, but quickly unravelled as both sides accused the other of violating its terms.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, meanwhile, is in Tehran for talks with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other officials as Islamabad attempts to revive negotiations.
