US-Iran War Live Updates: Qatar says mediators are making progress towards ending the five-month war, even as Tehran denies talks are under way and refuses to budge on control over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Follow for the latest updates.
Over a phone call, Trump and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani spoke about improving the prospects of a lasting settlement.
This comes as Iran is not budging its position over the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran wants control over inbound shipping and visibility over outbound traffic, with the power to intervene if necessary, under a temporary reopening plan being discussed with Oman, a senior Iranian source told Reuters. “Tehran is unlikely to change its position,” the source said.
Meanwhile, three sources told Reuters that the US Army has used up much of its global stockpile of highly accurate long-range ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles during the war, raising concerns about its readiness for future conflicts.
Closer home, India condemned the attack on the Indian-flagged commercial vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya, which sank in the Red Sea off Yemen on August 4. All 13 Indian nationals aboard were rescued. New Delhi described the continuing attacks on commercial shipping as “deeply worrisome” and called for free and unimpeded navigation to be restored at the earliest.
