Representative Tom Tiffany, a Republican with close ties to President Trump, easily won his party’s nomination for governor on Tuesday, according to The Associated Press.
Mr. Tiffany grew up on a farm, worked as a dam tender and now represents a conservative-leaning district in western Wisconsin. In his quest to wrest back the governorship after eight years under a Democrat, Gov. Tony Evers, Mr. Tiffany has said that his priorities would be to lower taxes, bring transparency to health care and protect farmland in Wisconsin.
Mr. Trump declared in his endorsement that Mr. Tiffany, 68, has “always been at my side.” As the primary drew near, Mr. Tiffany presented himself as a bulwark against “big-government socialism,” saying that his opponents wanted to empty prisons and abolish the police. He was the only major candidate on the Republican ballot.
“We’re going to paint that clear contrast every single day between the craziness of the left and the common sense that we’re going to bring to Madison,” Mr. Tiffany said at a recent campaign stop.
After the Democratic candidates debated each other onstage in the final weeks of the campaign, Mr. Tiffany said that the Democrats offered “chaos” and that the party’s primary was “a race to the left.”
In six years in Congress, Mr. Tiffany has championed stricter immigration laws and was a member of the Freedom Caucus, a group of House members who have pushed for far-right policies.
